Spoiler warning: this article spoils the ending of the Dr. Stone anime and the whole of the Terraforming chapter from volume 27 of the manga. A separate, marked section near the end covers the rest of volume 27, which the anime has not been announced to adapt.
Dr. Stone ended on 25 June 2026 after four seasons. Three and a half months later, on Saturday 10 October, the Stone Fes. 2026 event in Yokohama announced that it is not quite over: a sequel anime called Dr. Stone Terraforming is in production.
The announcement says it adapts the "Terraforming" story from volume 27 of the manga, and most reports stop there. So this article answers the obvious next questions. What is volume 27, what actually happens in Terraforming, and how much anime can you get out of it?
The short version
Dr. Stone Terraforming adapts a single bonus chapter published in July 2022, after the manga ended, and later collected in volume 27. Senku wakes up alone in the open sea after a plane accident leaves his friends petrified, and has to rebuild from nothing to revive them. No release date, format, staff or episode count has been announced. One chapter suggests a special, not a season.
What was announced at Stone Fes. 2026?
Production of Dr. Stone Terraforming has been approved. That is the whole of the hard news. The reveal came with a short trailer that looks back over Senku's inventions, cuts to a storm, has Senku deliver a newly recorded line about how exhilarating this is, and shows the title.
The manga's writer, Riichiro Inagaki, and its artist, Boichi, both sent messages. Inagaki's was the more playful one. He said he was moved that the anime had reached the manga's final chapter, and then joked that the "finale" event everyone was attending could be counted as one more lie, since the story carries on. Yuko Iwasa, the anime's character designer, drew a new picture of Senku to mark it.
What was not announced: a release date, a studio, a director, a cast list, an episode count, or where it will be shown. Even the format is unsettled. Anime News Network describes it as a sequel to the TV anime, while Anime Trending and others say it is not yet clear whether it is a series, a special or a film.
What is in Dr. Stone volume 27?
The main story of Dr. Stone is 232 chapters long and fits in 26 volumes. It ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from March 2017 to March 2022. Volume 27 is an extra book that came out two years later, on 4 April 2024 in Japan, with Viz Media's English edition following on 3 June 2025. It collects the stories published after the ending:
| Story | Length | First published | Being adapted? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terraforming | One chapter | 4 July 2022 | Yes, announced |
| 4D Science | Three chapters | November to December 2023 | Not announced |
That distinction matters. Several headlines say the anime adapts "volume 27", which makes it sound like a book's worth of material. The announcement names only Terraforming, and Terraforming is one chapter.
What happens in Terraforming?
I have pieced this together from a fan review written when the chapter came out, the fan wiki's summary and ScreenRant's notes, so take the fine detail as reported and not as something I can quote from the page. In order:
- Senku wakes up floating in the middle of the ocean. There is no land and no ship in sight, and he does not remember how he got there.
- He is coated in oil, which works as crude insulation and buys him time before the cold water kills him. On him he has a dose of revival fluid and a homemade earpiece, like the crystal radio from the Treasure Island arc.
- His memory comes back. He and his friends were on a plane when lightning struck it. The others were turned to stone to survive the crash, a trick the series has used before. Senku ended up revived by mistake and alone.
- He does what Senku does: starts again from nothing. One of the inventions mentioned is a sail made from fish skin.
- He finds and revives his friends one at a time. Suika and Chrome contribute an idea, Kohaku does the heavy work, and everyone gets to safety.
That is the story. By these accounts there is no new villain, and the reviewer I read noted that nothing major changes by the end. It is Dr. Stone's first episode in miniature: one person, no tools, and a list of things to make.
When is Dr. Stone Terraforming set?
After the ending, in the years when the Kingdom of Science is working on its last project. The final episode of the anime, "Ushers of an Exhilarating Future", closes with Senku back from the Moon, civilisation rebuilt, Taiju and Yuzuriha married, and Senku announcing that he intends to build a time machine.
Terraforming sits just after that. ScreenRant describes the incident as taking place during Taiju and Yuzuriha's honeymoon trip, and an earlier report from before the chapter's release said the group were out collecting materials for the time machine. Both can be true at once. This is the same crew turning a holiday into a supply run.
So you do not need to have read anything extra. If you watched the finale, you are exactly where the chapter starts.
Why is it called Terraforming?
I could not find a source that explains the title, so this is my reading. Terraforming means making a lifeless place fit to live in. That is what Senku does at the start of the series with a stone world, and what he does again here with an empty sea. The chapter shrinks the whole premise down to one man and one stretch of water.
The other reading is that it points forward, to the Moon and beyond, where the later story heads. I lean towards the first, because nothing reported about the chapter involves another planet.
How long will the anime be?
Nothing has been said, so here is the arithmetic. The TV anime covered 232 chapters in 94 episodes, which is about two and a half chapters an episode. Terraforming is one chapter.
On its own that is a single special, something like the one-hour Ryusui special from 2022, or a short film padded out with new scenes. A full season would need far more material than the announcement names.
There are two ways it could grow. The staff could add original material: the trailer looks back over Senku's old inventions, which suits a story about redoing them at speed. Or they could fold in 4D Science, the other three chapters in the volume. I think the second is likely in the end, because it is the only remaining Dr. Stone story to adapt. It has not been announced, and I would not count on it until it is.
Dr. Stone Terraforming release date and where to watch
There is no release date or window. The wording used was that production has been approved, which is the earliest stage a project is normally announced at. My guess is 2027 at the earliest, and that is only a guess.
No streaming service has been named either. Crunchyroll carries all four seasons and the Ryusui special, so it is the obvious home, but nothing is confirmed for Terraforming in India or anywhere else.
The staff are also unannounced. For reference, TMS Entertainment produced the whole TV series, and Shuhei Matsushita directed the Ryusui special and seasons 3 and 4.
The rest of volume 27: what is 4D Science?
Spoilers from here to the end of this section for manga chapters the anime has not been announced to adapt.
4D Science is three chapters, published in Weekly Shonen Jump at the end of 2023, about the time machine itself. Going by the fan wiki's summaries:
- The first chapter opens on a ten-year-old Senku running an experiment from the top of the Tokyo Skytree. In the present, Chrome proposes sending Morse code through time using bursts of petrification light, as a test of whether time travel will ever work.
- In the second, Xeno presents the time machine plan to other scientists and is not believed. The Kingdom of Science starts on a space elevator to move material to the Moon.
- In the third, Ryusui confronts the petrification device that stayed behind with humanity, and it explains its side of things.
This is the part that deals with the anime's last line. If you finished the finale wanting to know whether the time machine goes anywhere, 4D Science is where the answer starts, not Terraforming.
What I make of it
I like the choice more than I expected to. The complaint about Dr. Stone's ending, in the manga and again in the anime, was speed: the answer to the biggest mystery arrives, and a few minutes later the story is over. A small, low-stakes survival story is a gentler goodbye than that.
What doesn't work for me is the way it is being sold. "Sequel" and "volume 27" suggest a continuation of the plot. Terraforming is an epilogue. If it is released as a one-hour special and presented as that, it will go down well. If people spend a year expecting season 5 and the time machine, it will disappoint through no fault of its own.

Where I stand
Dr. Stone Terraforming is a coda, and I think that is the right size for it. One chapter about Senku starting from zero is the series saying goodbye in the way it said hello. The time machine is a different and bigger story, it lives in 4D Science, and until someone announces that, I would keep expectations for this one small.
